Reimar W. Thomsen

Reimar W. Thomsen MD PhD

Thomsen is Associate Professor and Consultant in Clinical Epidemiology at the Department of Clinical Epidemiology at Aarhus University Hospital. Thomsen and his team collaborate with epidemiologists and statisticians at leading US and European clinical research centers, including Boston University, the University of North Carolina, and the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. Thomsen’s team was among the first to provide firm epidemiological evidence that diabetes and hyperglycemia increase the risk of and mortality from several important infections, and to show that the immune modulatory properties of statins may have beneficial effects against severe infections. Thomsen is particularly interested in the clinical outcomes, complications, and prognosis of type 2 diabetes and predictors of these outcomes, including metabolic factors and medical therapies. He currently directs data management within the nationwide Danish Centre for Strategic Research in Type 2 Diabetes (DD2). DD2 has enrolled more than 5,000 incident type 2 diabetes patients with available detailed interview and biobank data, and 50,000 type 2-diabetes patients diagnosed in primary care since 2009. All data are managed and stored at Aarhus University Hospital.
